Postmodern Jukebox
I first discovered Postmodern Jukebox (PMJ) a few years ago when a Facebook friend posted the song above on their profile. I was like WOW! That is class. Amazingly talented singer and fun, upbeat, stylish video, with a fun tambourine guy thrown in. The song is “Really Don’t Care”, a Vintage Motown Style Demi Lovato Cover featuring Morgan James. Think Duffy meets Snoopy and Peanuts!
Really Don’t Care
They describe it as follows; “We took it back to Motown this week, and Morgan James joined us to lend her incredible vocals as we reimagined Demi Lovato’s “Really Don’t Care” as a classic Motown record. We even included Cher Lloyd’s rap. Oh yeah, and Tambourine Guy (real name: Tim Kubart) dropped by, too.”
I was going to write a post about that song alone. When I first heard it I played it constantly in the office job I was doing! Thankfully I was working in a Music setting at the time so was allowed to play music. Anyway, thought I would share some other songs from Postmodern Jukebox as their music is just absolutely amazing. Their repertoire is vast and flawless and has a Global appeal that hits many genres and styles.
Who are Postmodern Jukebox?
Postmodern Jukebox was created by Scott Bradlee, a Musician and Pianist living in New York city who had a love of older classic style music and wanted to bring it into the mainstream. He formed a musical collective and is now famous for working popular music into vintage genres, especially Swing, Jazz and Ragtime. PMJ began as a small group of friends making music and shooting videos in a basement in Queen’s, New York. Scott had struggled for years as a Jazz Musician, then one of his youtube videos went viral.
“I uploaded a video on YouTube of me doing this funny mashup thing I used to do as a kid of taking modern-day songs and playing them as a ragtime, and it went viral. I remember checking the next day and seeing this whole list of comments and wondering, ‘How did people find my video?’ And I found that Neil Gaiman, the writer, had tweeted it to all of his followers, and within a day, it had, you know, 10,000 views.” Scott Bradlee
Before He Cheats
Below is a Post Modern Jukebox country cover of “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood featuring Kitty Hawk. I absolutely LOVE this version. Vintage, Gamorous, up tempo Country Music.
Here’s PMJ’s description; “Say howdy to Kitty Hawk – a 4 piece girl band made up of some of Nashville’s top touring side women that are making their debut in this Post Modern Jukebox video! Here’s a Carrie Underwood classic gone vintage.”
Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
You may have heard U2 before but never like this! This is “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” – U2 (Gospel Soul Cover) featuring Rogelio Douglas, Jr. PMJ’s description; “Meet triple threat Rogelio Douglas, Jr – one of the best live performers on the planet and the emcee of our US Fall tour! His performance here simply speaks for itself.” What an awesome version.
Wake Me Up
Do you like the sound of Spanish? I do! 🙂 Here is “Wake Me Up” – Mariachi Style Avicii / Aloe Blacc Cover en Español featuring Robyn Adele Anderson. PMJ elarobate; “We invited Mariachi Fiesta del Norte to help us turn Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” into a mariachi tune, translated into Spanish. This marks my YouTube debut playing classical guitar, as well.” Very Sultry. Love it.
Seven Nation Army
Below is “Seven Nation Army” – Vintage New Orleans Dirge, White Stripes Cover featuring Haley Reinhart. PMJ describes this as; “The phenomenal Haley Reinhart bares her soul to transform the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army into a New Orleans funeral march.” A very classy version.
Tennessee Whiskey
This “Tennessee Whiskey” – Chris Stapleton Cover features Ryan Quinn & Jennie Lena. PMJ describes them as; “Two amazing ‘Voice’ stars together, accompanied by Scott Bradlee on piano! Here’s Ryan Quinn (from the Voice US) and Jennie Lena (from The Voice of Holland) on the George Jones / Chris Stapleton hit, “Tennessee Whiskey.”
Dream On
“Dream On” is an Aerosmith Cover from Postmodern Jukebox featuring Morgan James. “Morgan James – one of the first superstars that PMJ introduced – returns with a downright stunning vocal in our remake of the Aerosmith classic, “Dream On.” There are no words for the power of her voice! Enjoy this new classic & share with a friend.” Have to agree it’s an absolutely powerful version of that song.
You Give Love a Bad Name
Bon Jovi would be proud of this cracking cover version of “You Give Love A Bad Name” – Vintage Blues Style featuring Jennie Lena. PMJ’s desciption; “We have a jaw-dropping PMJ debut this week – and this one is international! Watch Holland’s own Jennie Lena sing Bon Jovi like you’ve never heard before in our classic blues-inspired remake of “You Give Love A Bad Name.” Chills are guaranteed.” Chills indeed.
