Happy IMBOLC – Saint Brigid’s Day

Hi everyone. Yesterday was Saint Brigid’s Day and Imbolc. The 1st of February. After a long hard January this is always a time I want to get out to the coast. Imbolc is associated with fertility and fire in the belly. New life starting to form and the first signs of Spring. For me it’s a time when the Ocean calls intensely. Its a time I like to go walking by crashing waves or even get in the sea. I was unable to go to the sea yesterday so instead I lounged around and started drawing Saint Brigid and Imbolc on my phone! Brigid is both a Saint and a Goddess and for me they are melded into one. I forget where the Goddess ends and the Saint begins. For these drawings I added a snowdrop flower typical for Imbolc and a fire in the belly symbolic also of this time and symbolising fertility. This is a time to start new projects and set new goals. Fire also symbolising Brigid’s association to blacksmithing. She was the Patron Saint of Blacksmiths or Smith Crafters among other things. These versions call to mind the blacksmithing with the fire.

Things I also might have added would be a triple goddess symbol, a cross, a hare, feathers and some flames etc. But using my phone it’s harder to do these fine details. Lambs and cows are also associated with this time. Intuitively as I drew this I created the spiral for the fire in the belly. I felt this turning into a snake, also associated with her and a swan but I also sensed a white flower forming, the snowdrop. I always do art from imagination and intuitively. I gave her a cloak and the colours green and white came to me. Saint Brigid’s Cloak is a story in itself. The colour red also came to me and I did a kind of Disco Brigid but the outfit looked like a red snail in the end!

So here is my art. A mixture of Brigid and Imbolc. It’s modern art. And brightly coloured. Just for fun. Hope you like it. I also felt the triple Goddess aspect here and Brigid is associated with the Maiden aspect so I portrayed her as youthful with glowing skin. The Golden version on the right is one of my favourite versions. The Ancient Celts saw time as a cyclical process based on a wheel of the year. Imbolc falls between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Imbolc is sacred to the Goddess Brigit. Goddess of Fertility, Healing and Poetry. There are many traditions associated with this time including making a Saint Brigid’s Cross out of reeds, lighting a candle and making grain dollies. I remember making a Saint Brigid’s Cross when I was younger.

It’s a great time to connect with your inner child or look back to the passions of your youth or things you did not do that you may want to action now. Like making music or starting to paint. If you are in the bloom of youth then it’s a great time to feel that power and focus on what you may want your future to be. Its a passionate time of year as we sense the first stirrings of Spring. I got a sense of the warrior too as I drew Brigid. And so maybe this is a time to stand strong in your own individual beliefs.

I may not have been walking through cold water and feeling invigorated or sitting by a camp fire under the light of the moon but energetically that’s where I wanted to be which is why I incorporated the Ocean into this picture. Today it is lashing with rain and last night was very windy. There was also aircraft noise that kept me awake. My one goal is to move to the sea. Brigid is associated with fire but I always yearn for water at this time. The water element with Brigid is her association with Healing Wells and there are many wells named after her. I can’t wait till the day I am living by the sea in a calm and quiet nature location painting mermaids, writing poetry, growing organic veg with a couple of pet animals running about. I don’t know quite how I will get there but it has to happen. Do any of you wish to relocate or maybe you are happy where you are.

In the meantime I am stuck in a city doodling on my phone when the inspiration takes me! Happy February everybody. Do any of you have a clear image of where you want to be in your life or are many of you lost? I guess some of you are happily settled. I think in life you have to Follow your Bliss. And the Ocean and the Wilderness of Nature calls me. My Spirit needs it. I hope you liked the music and videos.
